Robert A. Koetting, OD, FAAO (FOUNDER)

Dr. Robert A. Koetting’s father (Dr. Felix Koetting) opened an optometric practice in south St. Louis in 1921. Robert joined his father in practice in 1947 and in 1961 began a practice of his own concentrating exclusively on contact lens care. This is significant as, at that time, only about 1% of the population were wearing contacts and there were few options in terms of materials and designs. Nevertheless, Dr. Koetting saw a bright future and ventured out when few others had the foresight to do so.

Robert A. Koetting, OD, not only became a fixture in the St. Louis eye care community, but he became known nationally and internationally as a pioneer in the field of contact lenses. Dr. Koetting co-founded the International Society for Contact Lens Research and was the only person to simultaneously Chair the American Academy of Optometry Cornea and Contact Lens Section and the American Optometric Association Contact Lens and Cornea Section. He lectured nationally and internationally on a wide variety of topics and published numerous papers, articles and books. Dr. Koetting passed away in 2011 after a long and illustrious career.

Dr. Koetting’s legacy lives on as Koetting Eye Center continues to be a leader in the contact lens and general eye care field providing our patients with quality comprehensive care. In addition to continuing to specialize in contact lenses, our practice also offers the latest in medical eye services and vision care.
