Back to School

It is hard to believe it is that time of year again.  With schools starting earlier and earlier, it is time to start thinking about back to school preparation.  Before you get completely wrapped up in the chaos of back to school shopping, now is the perfect time to get your scholars in for their annual health exams.  We are often asked by parents, "when do my children need to have their eyes checked by a doctor?  I know they do the vision screening at school, but when do they actually need an eye exam?"  The answer to this question varies depending on your child's specific needs.  In general, we recommend full eye health exams by an optometrist before kindergarten.  However, if you, your child, or an instructor notice anything suspicious prior to this time you should schedule an eye exam earlier.  Vision tests provided by schools are simply just vision screenings and do not replace full eye health exam.  As with adults, there are many conditions a child could have that would not be recognized in your school's vision screening.  Additionally, with current treatment options, early detection and intervention of conditions like myopia (nearsightedness) is very important.

If you have any questions about your child's needs please call our office.  Have a wonderful summer and don't wait until the last minute to get your family's eye exams schedule!
